The next morning Maddie was wailing about a missing pink sweater, which she had to have or she could not sing in the Primary Program.

“It’s probably in your hamper,” Savannah said.

“And if it is, there isn’t time to wash it,” Jana said, “Wear that cute black-and-white one Aunt Rebecca sent you.”

“I left that one at school,” Maddie said. “Remember?”

Jana seemed to remember something about that. “Did you check the Lost and Found? That was a really expensive sweater.”

“I did and it wasn’t there,” Maddie said. “Someone must have stolen it.”

“Well, just choose something else.”

Maddie stomped off to her room and soon reappeared in a red jacket. Josh, who had missed her earlier theatrics said, “Oh, that’s a cute jacket, Maddie. Looks like Christmas,” at which point Maddie stifled a scream and fled back to her room to change again.

“Let me guess,” Jana smiled at Josh. “You’re hoping all your future children will be boys.”

Josh smiled. “That thought has crossed my mind.”

Finally Maddie settled on a multi-color speckled sweater, but groused about it all the way to church.

As usual, the Primary Program was phenomenal, with the usual Sunbeam or two yelling out the songs with fervent gusto, and three or four kids forgetting their lines and having to be prompted, but looking adorable nonetheless.

“Maddie, you did a great job,” Ethan said to her afterwards.

“And you looked lovely in your sweater,” Jana added.

By now Maddie was quite confident both those statements were true, and skipped off to class with her friends.

“Please tell me I was not that hot and cold,” Savannah muttered.

Jana just smiled. We are not out of the woods on that one.
